Former Sri Lankan test player who later joined Canadian national team and led them to World Cup as a coach and captain was appointed Nepal National Cricket Team’s head coach in late 2011. Since then Mr. Dassanayake has given international success to Nepalese cricket winning Asia’s biggest non-test nations ACC Elite Trophy 2012, promoting Nepal to division three by winning ICC World division four trophy in Malaysia and finishing 7th in World T20 final qualifiers in 2012 among world’s 16 best association nations. Hello coach, pleasure to talk to you after a long time.
Oh ya its good to talk to you again.

How are you feeling in Nepal these days? Do you find here as cold as in Canada?
Its good. sometime its chilly in the evening otherwise its good.

I remember last time when we talked you were just appointed Nepal’s head coach and you had not even been to Nepal. and you told us you wanted to come to Nepal with two missions, first to qualify Nepal for World T20 2012 final qualifiers and to promote to division three. नेपालको लिग कस्तो लाग्यो ?

ठीक लाग्यो । प्रतिस्पर्धात्मक छ । कुनै क्लब बलियो र कुनै कमजोर हुनु स्वाभाविक नै हो । क्लब र त्यहाँ आबद्ध खेलाडीअनुसार नतिजा निस्केको पाएँ ।

नेपाली खेलाडीको प्रदर्शनलाई कसरी मूल्यांकन गर्नु हुन्छ ?

Pubudu Dassanayake believes he can take Nepal to another level of cricket.


CricketFootball.com contacted Nepal’s new cricket coach Mr. Pubudu Bathiya Dassanayake who is yet to land in country and discussed his ambitions with Nepalese cricket. Mr Dassanayake a former Sri Lankan Test player led Canada to World Cup 2011 as a national coach. He has been living in Canada since 2001 with his family (wife and two kids).

How did you decide to be a coach of Nepal?
After world cup 2011 I stepped down as a coach of Canada. Then I came to know that Roy Dias will no longer be with of Nepal. At the same time, I got connected with Mr. Binay and after a few email exchanges I showed my interest. I heard a lot good things about Nepali Cricket through my colleague Rumesh Ratnayake who was ACC development manager (current Sri Lankan Coach) then other Sri Lankan colleagues of mine have also high regards for Nepali Cricket. They told that Nepali cricket has very high scope to reach another level. And I am kind of person who take challenges, it was also similar situation when I took charge of Canada, I got them through qualifiers and finally into World Cup. Read more

Can you tell us about newly appointed coach Pubudu Dasanayake ?
He is a former Sri Lankan Test Player and had coached Canada and is very interested to associate with Nepalese Cricket.

Why did CAN go with him? Fans wanted to have something different, coaches from other countries such as India?
He led Canada to World Cup, he has experience of coaching Canada which is higher ranked than Nepal, hence we believe he can take Nepal to another level in Cricket. Yes, we discussed about having Indian coach but India itself is a big market so all the coaches want to get engage there. Similarly, we are not in a position to afford very good Indian coach. Are you missing Nepal in UK?
It has just been a couple of weeks that I am out of Nepal. So if something good to say, yes I miss my home made food, and something bad then its got to be the polluted air of Kathmandu :D (laughs….)

How long is your UK tour and how is your personal performance so far?
