Nepal Could Not Make It To AFC Challenge Cup 2014

Host Nepal could not make it to AFC Challenge Cup 2014 after finishing third in group ‘D’. Nepal started campaign in a style defeating newcomer Northern Mariana Islands 6-0. But spirited host side went down to Bangladesh 0-2 after some harsh penalty decision from referee. In a final match which was a must win for Nepal to progress into tournament, Nepal played a goalless draw against group leader Palestine.

It is second time Nepal could not make it to Asia’s most prestigious tournament for emerging footballing nations. Nepal participated in final rounds of Challenge Cup in 2006, 2008 and 2012 where best performance was to reach semifinal in 2006. 20 emerging nations of Asia fight for 7 places while host Maldives is already qualified for AFC Challenge Cup 2014.
